Studded or studless winter tyres: which suits driving in Estonia?

Start with the roads you actually drive. Do you regularly set off before dawn on icy side roads, or mostly use maintained city streets? Neither tyre type is best in every condition. The performance of a particular model, the road surface and your driving speed all matter.

When should you consider studs?

Studded tyres are worth considering if bare ice is common on your route and road maintenance is irregular. Tyre condition, speed and following distance still matter. Estonia also limits when studs may be used. According to the Estonian Transport Administration, the normal period is 15 October to 31 March. In winter road and weather conditions, use is allowed 1 October to 30 April. Keep those dates in mind when planning seasonal changes.

When should you consider studless tyres?

Studless winter tyres are an option for drivers who mainly use maintained roads and want to avoid the seasonal limit that applies to studs. A studless winter tyre used in Estonia needs the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol (3PMSF). M+S alone is insufficient. The Transport Administration also recommends looking for the ice-grip pictogram on studless tyres intended for icy conditions. That symbol indicates an ice-grip test; check wet-road performance separately on the EU tyre label and in model-specific tests.

Five checks before you buy

  1. Note how often you drive on ice, snow and wet asphalt, and at what time of day.
  2. Confirm the tyre size, load index and speed rating approved for your vehicle.
  3. For studless winter tyres, check 3PMSF; if you frequently drive on ice, also look for the ice-grip symbol.
  4. Compare tests of the exact models and their wet-grip label classes, not just brand or price.
  5. For used tyres, measure tread depth. Estonia's winter minimum is 3 mm; the Transport Administration recommends replacement at 4 mm.
