Winter tyres in Estonia: when to change and how to choose

Checked on 27 September 2026. The right time to change tyres depends on the weather and your route, not only the legal deadline. Before buying, check the approved tyre size for your car and the markings on the exact model you intend to order.

When are winter tyres required in Estonia?

For passenger cars and the other vehicle categories specified by the Estonian Transport Administration, winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March. Studded tyres are normally permitted from 15 October to 31 March. In winter road or weather conditions, they may be used from 1 October to 30 April. Changing before the first icy morning is safer than waiting for the mandatory date.

Studded or non-studded tyres?

Studded tyres are worth considering when you often drive on icy secondary roads. Non-studded winter tyres may suit drivers who mostly use cleared urban roads. Neither category is automatically best in every condition: compare independent tests for the particular model and size, and consider wet-road behaviour as well as snow and ice grip.

In Estonia, a non-studded winter tyre must carry the three-peak mountain and snowflake (3PMSF) marking. The M+S letters alone do not establish suitability for Nordic winter conditions. A 3PMSF non-studded tyre may be used year-round under Estonian rules, but year-round legality does not make every model equally suitable for summer and winter driving.

What to check before ordering

  1. Size and indices. Use a tyre size, load index and speed rating approved for your vehicle. Check the owner's manual or the manufacturer's vehicle information.
  2. Tyre label. Compare wet grip, rolling resistance and external noise. Look for the snow symbol and, where relevant, the ice symbol. The EU tyre-label guide explains these marks; the label's QR code leads to the EPREL product record.
  3. Condition. For tyres already in use, inspect damage and wear. Estonia's Transport Administration gives 3 mm as the legal minimum winter tread depth and recommends replacement at 4 mm.
  4. Exact product. Verify the model, size, seasonal type, price, availability and delivery terms before placing the order.
